I have an idea for a new thread here. Obviously all of us here love to catch pike, but I know we all like catching other species as well.

I'd like to have a thread here where you can talk about what kind of fish you like to go catch and how to do it. I'll start with an example.

Perch
I like to catch perch out of the little trout ponds around Edmonton. They're not supposed to be in there so I don't feel bad about keeping my limit and I don't care how small they are because I can fillet a four inch perch just as well as jumbo, and with 15 of them there's usually enough for the whole family. You have to check your regs in Alberta because they've restricted the bag limit on perch in a lot of trout ponds in Alberta to try to reduce incentive for illegal stocking, but Hasse, Spring and several other lakes still have the 15 max.

Ice fishing for these guys works well. Use small hooks and I like to tip them with maggots. Drill a hole near an island and try to get about 8 to ten feet of water. Drop the hook and try different jigging patterns. Some days they want a lot of flash, while others just leave it to sit totally still. I have caught them all through the water column, but 99% of the time they're within 3 inches of the bottom. You can also catch them from shore in the spring and summer using small pickerel rigs with tiny worms or leeches. Cast out as far as you can and keep the rod tip up.

I've probably caught thousands of perch out of small trout ponds over the years and I love it. They don't tend to have a lot of fight but if the bite is hot you are busy the whole time you're out. Plus, I've landed a few nice trout while going for perch, and no one complains about that.

Well this is a cool idea, love it, I am gonna have to add a classic species to the list. Course you all know ol Jackfish is my favorite but there are some species that get me going, and will get me out of bed down right EARLY Wink And the scenery, has to be done live because words can't describe this river. I am talking about the Kootenay River in B.C and the stretch around the Fairmont, Columbia valley area. Now lurking in there are a species of trout that will re arange your DNA and bust you up without warning, and it's one of my favorites the.

Bull Trout:

Yep this ones a classic, and best of all it's native to our country. Although the so called Rainbow guy's and mis management have run the Bull almost out of Alberta. In B.C they have been carefull about how they have treated the Bull Trout, and the Kootenay River is just amazing for them. 20 pounds is my big one so far, and I have hooked larger and paid a price in injuries to my arm and wrist with em. Laura and I consistently catch 5 to 10 pound Bull trout in there all the time. You need a sandbag sinker, and a cool can of Pink Maggies and #6 snelled Eagle Claw's 15 inches up from the bag. Also Bucktail Jigs will smash em, big Bucktail jigs guy's not those sissy little 3/32oz goofsticks I mean 1/2 oz jigs with a big gob of bucktail on em. For fly's I use my Pike set up and use large poppers and frog imitations and have done very good with this set up, you must use Cortland 444 fly line floating Rocket taper. Anything else and your going to get re aranged the hard way ha ha.
